Making Stuff Up

On Thanksgiving a bunch of us were downstairs at Grandma and Grandpa's house watching a DVD of the church youth program that was performed the weekend of the Kansas City Temple dedication.  Two of my sisters and their families live in the Kansas City area so during the program there were a lot of people they knew in the pictures and video.  On one picture, my niece Farah, commented to her mom (my sister Tanya) and pointed out a family they knew in the audience, "look mom, it's the Soenso's!"  Mason, desperate to talk and being shushed throughout the program said, "Yeah!  I know them, it's the Soenso's!  I know who they are.  I recognize them too."

I told Mason he did not know them and to quit making stuff up.  He replied, "Mom, I like to talk all the time and I have to make stuff up sometimes so I can keep talking."  At the time I had no response so I let him get away with it, but we have since worked on ways to make sure people know when his stories are things he made up and when he is telling the truth.

Not My Job to Teach Them

Not my Job to teach them

Saturday night after Thanksgiving was game night at the Owens house, and after we finished playing "Smarty Party."  The little kids ran up to me to tattle on David for hiding the paper and crayons/pens.  As I yelled for David to come in to talk to me, but by the time he arrived from the next room he had his defense prepared, already spouting as he walked in the room, "Mom, it's not my job to help them find the paper.  I can't always do everything for them, they need to start learning to do things on their own."

I said, "Yes David, but that doesn't count when you PURPOSELY hide the paper and crayons from them."  He quickly responded with, "I just trying to teach them to take care of themselves" and again repeated that it shouldn't be his responsibility to find them for them.  I said, "David, you are not in charge of the other children and it is not your job to teach them anything, okay?"

David quickly exclaimed, "I KNOW!  That's what I've been saying, it's not my job to show them.  That's why they need to figure this out by themselves."  David 1 point, mom zero.

Thank you Sarah for helping me fill in the gaps on my memory.

This is a picture of five of the boys all sharing the love seat at Grandma and Grandpa's on Thanksgiving watching a cartoon on TV.

Rich and Awesome

Tonight, the boys were cleaning up their toys they got at our battalion's Christmas party this afternoon.  They had been opening up packages and playing for almost five hours so there was plenty to pick up.  David was upset that it was time to stop playing and start getting ready for bed so he was sulking in his bedroom while Mason was picking everything up.  He was throwing stuff away and heard me mention to Super Dave about what a great job Mason was doing and that we should put a quarter in his piggy bank for all the extra work he was doing.  He said, "yeah, and I found some money by the door earlier."  Super Dave asked, "Money?  How much, like a million bucks?"  Mason said, "No, but if I did find that much money I'd be rich AND awesome!"  Love that kid.
