Making Stuff Up

On Thanksgiving a bunch of us were downstairs at Grandma and Grandpa's house watching a DVD of the church youth program that was performed the weekend of the Kansas City Temple dedication.  Two of my sisters and their families live in the Kansas City area so during the program there were a lot of people they knew in the pictures and video.  On one picture, my niece Farah, commented to her mom (my sister Tanya) and pointed out a family they knew in the audience, "look mom, it's the Soenso's!"  Mason, desperate to talk and being shushed throughout the program said, "Yeah!  I know them, it's the Soenso's!  I know who they are.  I recognize them too."

I told Mason he did not know them and to quit making stuff up.  He replied, "Mom, I like to talk all the time and I have to make stuff up sometimes so I can keep talking."  At the time I had no response so I let him get away with it, but we have since worked on ways to make sure people know when his stories are things he made up and when he is telling the truth.

Not My Job to Teach Them

Not my Job to teach them

Saturday night after Thanksgiving was game night at the Owens house, and after we finished playing "Smarty Party."  The little kids ran up to me to tattle on David for hiding the paper and crayons/pens.  As I yelled for David to come in to talk to me, but by the time he arrived from the next room he had his defense prepared, already spouting as he walked in the room, "Mom, it's not my job to help them find the paper.  I can't always do everything for them, they need to start learning to do things on their own."

I said, "Yes David, but that doesn't count when you PURPOSELY hide the paper and crayons from them."  He quickly responded with, "I just trying to teach them to take care of themselves" and again repeated that it shouldn't be his responsibility to find them for them.  I said, "David, you are not in charge of the other children and it is not your job to teach them anything, okay?"

David quickly exclaimed, "I KNOW!  That's what I've been saying, it's not my job to show them.  That's why they need to figure this out by themselves."  David 1 point, mom zero.

Thank you Sarah for helping me fill in the gaps on my memory.

This is a picture of five of the boys all sharing the love seat at Grandma and Grandpa's on Thanksgiving watching a cartoon on TV.

Rich and Awesome

Tonight, the boys were cleaning up their toys they got at our battalion's Christmas party this afternoon.  They had been opening up packages and playing for almost five hours so there was plenty to pick up.  David was upset that it was time to stop playing and start getting ready for bed so he was sulking in his bedroom while Mason was picking everything up.  He was throwing stuff away and heard me mention to Super Dave about what a great job Mason was doing and that we should put a quarter in his piggy bank for all the extra work he was doing.  He said, "yeah, and I found some money by the door earlier."  Super Dave asked, "Money?  How much, like a million bucks?"  Mason said, "No, but if I did find that much money I'd be rich AND awesome!"  Love that kid.

Courage to Do What is Right - Primary Talk

David did such a good job on his first talk that he was asked to give another talk during the primary presentation during Sacrament.  The Subject was on the blessings we receive when we stand up for what is right.

Do What is Right

David's Primary Talk (21 October 2012)

We will be blessed when we have the courage to do what is right.  There will be many times in our lives when we will need courage to live the gospel of Jesus Christ.  When we are tempted to make wrong choices and instead do the right thing, that is showing courage.  Helaman's two thousand stripling warriors had the courage to do what was right because they were taught that if they believed in God, He would watch over them.  Because of their faith and courage to choose the right, many Lamanites were killed in a fierce battle, but none of the stripling warriors died.  Sometimes it is hard to choose the right, but Heavenly Father blesses us when we do.  As we make good choices we can feel peace and happiness.  The source of true happiness is gospel truth and obedience to eternal law.  By having the courage to do what is right we can be blessed.  By keeping God's commandments and listening to the promptings of the Holy Ghost, we will receive countless blessings, greater strength and true happiness.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

David's First Primary Talk

Below is a copy of David's first talk he gave in primary on 26 August 2012.  For only 6 years old he is an incredible reader.  :)

Exodus 20:8 says to 'Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.'  Jesus taught that the purpose of the Sabbath is to give us a day to rest from our usual daily activities.  It is a day to think about Jesus, to worship and serve him.
Sometimes it is hard to keep the Sabbath day holy because a lot of kids don't.  Sometimes they tease you or are mean to you about it.  But keeping the Sabbath day holy helps me feel happy because I feel the Holy Ghost more than if I didn't.
The Holy Ghost helped me make the decision to not play in soccer games that were on Sunday.  That helped me feel happy even though it was a hard decision.
Heavenly Father has given us 6 other days we can do those things.  Sunday is for him.
I say this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Lemonade Odors

A few weeks ago we were at grandma and grandpa's house and Mason found a package of those air fresheners shaped like cedar trees (the ones you see hanging on rear view mirrors) sitting on the kitchen counter.  Grandpa was trying to watch a football game on TV, but that did not deter Mason from talking to him.  Mason asked Grandpa what the air fresheners were for and he distractedly told Mason, "it's uh... they eliminate odors."

Mason thought about this for a few seconds, then asked, "Lemonade Odors?"  Grandpa nodded, only half paying attention.  Mason continued to repeat Lemonade odors, trying to figure out what grandpa meant, "Lemonade odors?  Lemonade odors?  Oh, for when you're making lemonade that smells bad?  It gets rid of those smells... But I like the smell of lemonade, " shrugging his shoulders and walking downstairs to join the rest of the kids.

Corn dog diet

On the way home from school today I asked the boys if they would mind if we stopped for pizza on the way home.  David yelled YES! at the same time Mason Moaned NO!  I asked Mason if he was okay with pizza and he said, "Nope.  I want corn dogs.  I told him we did not have any corn dogs, I had not made it to the store yet.  His response was, "Awww, well, I started my new diet and I can only have corn dogs tonight!"
He settled for pepperoni pizza tonight and the promise that we would get to the store this weekend to get him some corn dogs.

Bedtime Excuses

David and Mason will use ANY excuse to get out of bed at lights out, anything to procrastinate falling asleep. If you have never experienced this with your own kids, lucky you, and don't rub it in. For the rest of you who have felt my pain, Mason's excuses escalated to the next level this week. If you have seen any of the previous blog pictures, you know Mason has a buzz cut hairstyle. We buzzed his head again last Sunday, then Monday night after we put the boys to bed they were a little wired, okay, Extremely wired. Mason was on the top bunk and David was on the bottom. SuperDave and I had already been back to their bedroom to tell them to quiet down three times and they were working hard to stifle their laughter. Then, Mason wandered out into the living room and after stalling while trying to think of a valid reason why he was out of bed, he said, "Mommy, ... (Stalling) ... Ummm ... David , Ummm... (more stalling) ... David pulled my hair." At this point I just stared at him and he stared back, trying not to laugh. My first question to him, trying not and he stared back, trying not to laugh. My first question to him, trying not to start with the obvious, was how did David reach his head while he was in bed on the top bunk? He started to think about my question, but I asked him to try to pull his own hair and he could not grasp any of it because his hair was too short. By this time he was grinning from ear to ear so I just shook my head and told him to go back to bed. There were no more excuses or noises for the rest of the night after that.

Frustration and Sarcasm

A couple weeks ago the boys were folding their clothes and putting them away while Super Dave (Hubby) and I were talking about needing a new computer for home. Super Dave said when we get paid we'll get a new computer and Mason getting frustrated at the clothes started mumbling, "Next time we get paid... I'm going to DIE because I can't do this!" Then later that same day we were teasing Mason about what errands we were going to accomplish since we were both home on a Saturday together. Mason kept asking where we were going and Super Dave and I kept making up outlandish stories to answer him. Mason finally started getting frustrated and rolled his eyes and exclaimed, "You guys are just being pathetic!" I asked him if he meant 'sarcastic' and he said "Yeah, you guys are just being sarcastic! That's what I said." -Karen www.silasdak.com

Potato Spaghetti

Super Dave had a nurse stop by the house to draw some blood yesterday and the boys were very fascinated. Mason asked her why she had to take his blood, and the nurse explained it was to make sure dad was healthy. Mason thought for a few seconds and then said, "Oooh... because he eats spaghetti?" The nurse asked if spaghetti was good for you and he said, "yeah, because the sauce has potatoes in it." Karen www.silasdak.com

Only in preschool

Back in July the boys were staying at my parents' house, Grandpa picked them up from school. While in the backseat David bragged to Grandpa that he could count to 30. Mason said he could too and started counting. 1-20 went like they normally do, then it was, "21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 28, 27, 29, 28, 26, 28,...UGH! It gets confusing cause there's so many numbers up there!" That same day once they got to Grandpa's house, the boys started to get into mischief. Grandpa found them in the bathroom putting hand soap in their hair to spike it up in a faux-hawk. Grandpa got on to them and explained that hand soap is not for hair and helped them wash it out while Mason mumbled, "I didn't know, I'm only in preschool!" Reminding him of this story Mason will assure you that now that he is a school-ager in kindergarten he knows how to count to 30 and knows better than to put hand soap in your hair. Have a good night all! Karen

Holy Lost Pants Batman!!!

Last night Mason fell asleep in the bedroom Super Dave and I were staying in at the lake. When we were headed to bed I had Mason go to the bathroom before putting him on his bed. He got his Batman pajamas wet in the process so I took them off him and put him to bed in his Batman shirt and underwear. I woke up in the morning to Mason going through his bag in our bedroom and finding a swimsuit to put on. When he caught me watching him he said, "I lost my pants while I was sleeping last night." Super Dave asked him if that happened a lot and he just shrugged and said, "no" and went on with his day. The picture is of Jillian, Gracie, DJ, Noah, and David all sitting on the couch at the condo we stayed at this weekend. We had a blast! Thanks Cindy and Stephen! -Karen

Enjoying a quiet rainy weekend at the lake... This weekend the kids and us decided to meet some friends at the Lake of the Ozarks to relax over the holiday weekend. Their daughter, Gracie, is four years old and LOVES having Jillian around. They were sitting on the floor playing a card game, or trying to play a card game with all the boys around, and Gracie tells Jillian, "Your my best friend, so I won't kill you." Apparently she has seen "Ahmed the Dead Terrorist" one too many times. We are having a great weekend so far, even with all the rain. David has taken their two year old son, Noah, under his wing and is being very protective over him. Definitely a different kind of chaos compared to the Bull Shoals Lake adventures we usually enjoy. Have a great weekend all! Karen P.S. For a detailed introduction to our family, check out our website at www.silasdak.com.

New website announcement

Happy Friday Everyone!!! I first want to announce that we have started a website! Go check it out at www.silasdak.com. It's a resource site for on-the-go parents that are doing their part to raise happy, healthy, and safe kids. There are a lot of good links on there with a lot of great info. Go check it out! Now, on to the latest Masonism... This past Saturday morning Mason asked us if he could get something for breakfast. Super Dave (hubby) said "Sure, we'd love some bacon and eggs and toast." I told Mason I'd prefer waffles with my eggs and bacon. Mason looked at us very seriously, thought about it for a sec and then said,"Okay. I'll go get you a Pop-Tart." Have a wonderful and safe Labor Day weekend! -Karen

Today at church the primary children went up front and sang a song for Father's Day. When they came back and sat down Mason said,"That was so weird. Usually they don't let me go up there. It must be because I'm getting older." I told him that it's true, he is getting taller, to which he responded, "Yeah! And when I turn 79 I'll be a teenager!" I didn't know what to say to that since the next speaker had started talking already so I just smiled and said, "Something like that."

Pictures of the boys at Family Day at the Farmington Armory on 6 May 2012. David the Pirate and Mason the Tiger!
On the way home today Mason tells me that another girl at daycare also had meatloaf and mashed potatoes for dinner last night. I asked him if ours tasted better than hers and he said "Yep. And she agreed that ours was better. She said that her mom's meatloaf rocked. I told hers your meatloaf rocked the best and she said 'ok whatever.'"

No one will ever know the strength of my Love for you. After all, you are the only ones who know what my heart sounds like from the inside. I love you short ones! Happy Mother's Day to all the mom's out there. You are all beautiful!

On our way home from church Wednesday night the fireflies were out in mass.  I told the boys to look at all of them twinkling in the fields.  Mason then says, "Mommy, I know why the fireflies light up." I asked him why and he said, "Because they're scared of the dark."

From the Mouth of David...

A few months ago Grandpa asked David about our dog and said he instead of she. Dave corrected him and said she's a girl dog. Grandpa asked how he could tell and he said "because she has a happy face. Boy dogs have a serious face."

And then...

Little Dave is on a BIG Mizzou kick right now, so a couple months ago I was tucking him in bed and asked him if he was going to go to Mizzou for college. After explaining that Mizzou's a school that he can go to after high school he asked me if the St. Louis Cardinals have a college?

From the Mouth of Mason:  January 15th, 2012 seems like a good place to start.
Mason (Age 4), found a dollar in his scripture case and pulled it out to show Grandpa. When Grandpa asked him what that money was called he said "I think that's called cash."
